Making an indie press work is a formidable task, but these presses have made their mark heavy and dark: Octopus Books, Mud Luscious Press, and Spring Gun Press. Each with its own approach to publishing in our current literary scape, these indie presses have employed a number of mainstream strategies in order to sell books, promote words, and make their publishing endeavors successful, but they have all used subversive tactics toward the same goal as well, and this panel will highlight those unconventional maneuvers and the results they had on each of these successful indie presses. A third-party moderator will introduce each press and its representative and facilitate the prepped panel discussion as well as a brief audience Q and A. Representatives and focal points of the panel will be: Mathias Svalina for Octopus Books, elaborating on the new Tin House / Octopus Books collaborative poetry series; J. A. Tyler for Mud Luscious Press, discussing the stamp stories project and the Nephew imprint series; and Mark Rockswold for Spring Gun Press talking about ways to merge digital and print mediums.
